【摘要】:Thistestmethodprovidesaquickreliablemeanstomeasurethezero-spantensilestrengthofarandomlyorientedspecimenoffiberswhendry.Similarproceduresfordeterminingthezero-spantensilestrengthofarandomlyorientedspecimenoffiberswhenwetarefoundinTestMethodD5803.Inthistestmethod,thefibersaretestedasahandsheetproducedusingastandardizedproceduresuchasTAPPIT205.Whiletestingispossibleonfinishedpapermaterials,informationonfiberqualityfromintermediatestepsinthepulpingorpapermakingprocess,orboth,isfrequentlymoreusefulforimprovingfinishedpaperqualityorimprovingfiberutilizationof,forexample,recycledfibers,orfiberssubjectedtonewpulping,bleaching,orfinishingprocesses.Themodificationsoftheproceduredescribedinthistestmethodrequiredfortestingfinishedpaperisstraightforward;however,testingmustbedoneinthetwoprincipledirectionsofthesheet,asrequiredinTestMethodD828,sincethefinishedpaperorpaperboardwillgenerallyhavenon-randomfiberorientation,resultingindifferentstrengthpropertiesinthetwoprincipledirectionsofthefinishedsheet.Testingofsheetshavingagrammagegreaterthan100g/m,whichincludessomepapermaterialsdescribedaspaperandmanypaperboards,isdifficultbecauseofproblemsassociatedwithclampingofindividualfibersasthenumberoffibersperunitareaincreases.Suchmodificationsarenotdescribedinthistestmethod,andiftheyaremade,theyshallbeacknowledgedandclearlydescribedinthereportasdeviationsfromthestandardprocedure.Inadditiontoameasureofthedryzero-spantensilestrengthofthespecimenoffibers,anindexofthecohesivenessoffibersinthesheetisalsoprovidedbytheratioofthetensilestrengthdeterminedusingTestMethodD828andthetensilestrengthdeterminedusingthistestmethodwhenalltestingisdoneonhandsheetshavingrandomfiberorientation(1).Twoinstrumentalapproachesforaccomplishingthemeasurementofdrytensilestrengthatzero-spanaredescribed.Oneapproachistheuseofspeciallyconstructedpairof"zero-span"jawswhichareusedinconjunctionwithaconventionaltensiletestingmachine.Onesuchdesignfor"zero-span"jawswasproposedbyClark(1).AseconddesignwasproposedbyWinkandVanEperen(2).Asecondapproachistheuseofaspecialinstrumentincorporatingboth"zero-span"jawsandmeasurementandreadoutdevicesinasingleinstrument.Whenproperlyadjustedandcalibrated,eitheroftheinstrumentalapproachesmaybeusedtoperformthistestmethod.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
